It was a fave "use case" of mine when we were inventing 3G :) I wrote about it in the first edition of my book Next Generation Wireless Applications, using FOAF as the "relationship graph." I think FOAF died off as a meme. An initial discovery entry-point for this was events - "who here is like me?" - and that was tried a few times (and we even thought BlueTooth was the answer). I will be intrigued to see what problem this really solves when you launch it... Good luck!

Re: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign – 2.0

Among the four-year state universities, only at the state's flagship campus, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, did these freshmen average at ...

Re: What is One?

What happened to One Plyr?

Re: POLKADOT SPOT, ME

:)

Re: Interview with Young Entrepreneur, Sean McCleese (StudentOfFortune.com)

I just found your blog on the google search engine and read a few of your other posts that you had done . My goal was to pick extraordinary speakers.
I look up to all of the speakers, and I am confident that they will be able
to influence everyone in the audience. To answer your question about the
format, I am still experimenting with conference formats. At the last
NextGen Conference, there were two panels, a business plan competition, and
a few keynotes. This year's NextGen Conference consists of four keynotes,
one panel, and an Ignite Session. I'll ask for audience feedback after this
conference to make the next NextGen Conference even better! Hope my
response answered your questions. See you on Wednesday!

Re: NextGen Conference – January 12th, 2011

Cory, I'm excited for the conference. You have really pulled this thing together - great job! I am curious, what made you pick the speakers you did? Why did you choose to format the conference like you did - one-day vs two, 5 speakers instead of 2, or 10? See you next week - cheers

Re: So, you think I should go to engineering school?

Cool, Thanks for the help!

All of my friends in CS (and ECE) have also recommended 225 and have said that it is a good class on the whole. But the issue is time. Since CS topics are not central to my curricular and career focus they have to be 2nd preference to courses that are central to my curricular focus. But at the same time I enjoy programming and am good at it (if I do say so myself)and would like to have basic knowledge like 225. Also, my friend who is an algorithms guy highly recommended 473. And I agree algorithms are universally applicable. This all makes enough courses for a minor in fact: ECE 190+CS225+CS473+CS465 maybe 173 and one other class. What do you think about all this? How useful is hardcore CS knowledge and courses for someone whose main study is not CS...

And yea, I stay at Allen :)

Regards,

Roshan

Re: So, you think I should go to engineering school?

Hi NahSoR,

I'm a CS major (I'm guessing you're in ECE), so I've taken CS225 but not ECE190. CS225 was one of my favorite classes, and I use knowledge from CS225 almost every day.

I just looked through the ECE190 course website, and it looks like the assignments related to pointers and recursion are similar to those discussed in CS125 (and quickly reviewed in the first couple days of CS225). CS225 offers good coverage of data structures (e.g. heaps, hash tables, numerous kinds of trees) and common algorithms (especially for sorting).

From what I've seen, web design often involves writing code to "glue" existing programs together. The existing programs often take care of tasks that require highly-optimized data structures and algorithms. However, it can never hurt to understand what's going on behind the scenes. If you take CS225 and are still interested in the implementation of "behind the scenes" stuff, perhaps Databases (CS411) would be a good class. (I haven't taken the course, but the syllabus connects with your interests.)

I haven't taken CS465, but I've heard positive impressions from friends who have taken it. You might notice that CS225 is a prerequisite for most 400-level CS classes. The good news is that many of the 400-level classes require nothing higher than CS225. :-)

Best,
Forrest

P.S. do you live in Allen Hall, or do you just really like the south part of campus?

Re: So, you think I should go to engineering school?

Hey Forrest,

I mostly want to get into (client-side) web programming and web design....So ROR, HTML, CSS and PHP etc.

How much do you think i stamd to gain from CS225 in relation to these interests? I have taken ECE190 already. I like the idea of having the net, and to answer some of the questions posted in the previous comment, the number of people would make moving around the court easier so you wouldn't have to move as fast, making the water a possibility. The fact that we wrote about the same thing but varied it differently is really interesting, I think it shows something about the people we are. :)

Re: Pool Tennis (ENG 198 class)

I like how you and Annie wrote about the same idea! It shows how the components are really your passions.
My question is: Would there be a limit to how many hits each player gets? Would it be 3 hits like volleyball?
Also, how deep would the water be? Would players be able to stand, or do they have to tread water?
It's an interesting idea, but I think changes might be needed as it would be very difficult for players to play this game because it'd be a very fast game, and therefore difficult to play in water!

Re: Listening (ENG 198)

First off I love the quote by Epictetus.Taking notes is a great way to get the speaker enthusiastic to speak even more. The speaker feels you are definitely taking him seriously. But then there are some speakers who hate speaking without making eye contact. They feel you are not paying enough attention to them & if you take notes they feel you are trying to avoid eye contact. So taking notes method works for some people and for some it doesn't.The hard part though is differentiating between these two different kind of personalities.I think having a good sense of emotional intelligence will greatly help in such a situation. My question to you is what steps would you take to get better at this kind differentiation ?

Re: Listening (ENG 198)

I liked how you took this opportunity to help people in our community! What a great way to turn an assignment into a service as well!
Great observation about the effects of note-taking. I also find that when someone is listening to me and taking notes, I feel more eager to speak, as I feel I have their complete attention for the while! Nice ending note about research. Preparation for a talk is definitely helpful, as it shows you care about the meeting.

I was wondering, how do you think the meeting would've gone differently if you took notes? Would you have been able to recognize different feelings the speaker has about each area? Although the topic is obviously something they're passionate about, would you be able to more precisely pinpoint their ambitions?

Re: Listening (ENG 198)

That sounds like a really great opportunity to explore your listening skills. What other skills were you able to determine that you showed well? Taking notes while someone else is talking directly to me has always made me feel like I'm not paying enough attention to the speaker. But its really impressive that you are self aware enough to realize that that's something you need. I'm not sure I could determine what things I would have to do to help my listening skills develop.

Re: Remotes should be designed better

The idea of having a remote with less buttons is really awesome.I feel that another addition to this design could be making the buttons bigger.I have also noticed that the labels for the buttons always keep coming off there must be a way to make the labels out of a certain material such that they do not come off.I also saw a special report at a dis ability expo i visited which had fewer but big buttons with huge labels.I think if all remotes should have that as it would satisfy many users' needs.

Re: Interview with Evan Slusher (Charity: Water)

Here is a project that will help people.
